Make 'em afraid of ya (Hinoiri Kirara)
Date of Cutscene: 31 January 2024
Location: Obsidian tower
Synopsis: Sunbreaker, at the behest of Easter and Riventon, gives the DG girls a lesson on one of the greatest tools in their arsenals, as dark energy users. Fear. (Parody: Make 'em afraid)
Cast of Characters: Hinoiri Kirara

Sunbreaker tapped her foot, eyes locked on the girls in front of her. They looked… unique. She wasn’t sure about all of this, though. Dark energy wasn’t a toy. Could these girls really handle it? Still… she supposed it wasn’t entirely about that. It was about teaching them that just… blowing up their problems wasn’t entirely enough. To beat the sparkle skirts, they had to play a different way.

Five moth-themed magical girls. All radiating dark energy. All powered from the reactor deep in Obsidian tower’s core. Artificial sparkle skirts.

“Fighting the sparkle skirts isn’t about power, violence or even destruction,” Sunbreaker said. “It’s something… else.”

“I don’t see why we can’t just incinerate the lot of them,” Chaar said, the red girl. Sunbreaker had to admit, the fact they were color coded helped.

“Because it doesn’t work that way,” Sunbreaker said. “Every time one of our lot tries to push too hard, this world’s magic bounces back on us. Harder. Faster. If you want to go out there, you can try. Then you can die and there can be a new Chaar. You’re welcome to go get yourself killed if you want.”

Chaar growled, but didn’t leave. Fem, the pink DG girl, snickered into her palm.

“It’s not about destruction. If you kill one, two more will pop up. If you kill three, five. It doesn’t matter in that regard. For now? We have the advantage. We act, they react. So we… can crush them. Wear them down. What’s important… is that you control the narrative. Set the pace. Overwhelm them, and then when they’re tired? Well… that’s when you break them.” Sunbreaker snapped her fingers. The music started and the girls stood at attention, almost instinctively.

“I know you’ve all been hurt, in one way or another. People dismissed you. They lied to you. They betrayed you. They shoved you aside and took everything you DESERVED from you. But Obsidian wants to give you all of it back… and more. All you need to do is understand where your powers come from… and how you need to use them. Killing isn’t power. When you’re truly powerful, you don’t need to. Because the moment you appear, they’ll run and cower.”

Sunbreaker walked towards and took Chaar’s hand. She pulled it out, palm up. Then the music began to play...

“What you want is at your fingers, yeah.

What now? Stop running.

They’ll know ya as that chick who won't back down.

You’re coming. The flame who threatens their desires.

A fire. An urge to be bad.

They can't expect to beat the monster they made mad.”

“I’m not running,” Chaar objected, trying to pull her hand away. Sunbreaker didn’t let her. Instead, she held the palm with one hand, the other hand moving to hover over Chaar’s. Fire formed inbetween them. It began to slowly, gradually, grow. Bigger and bigger. As Chaar began to nervously stare at it. Sunbreaker just continued to sing.

“Now! The tables have turned, hah.

The bridges you burned with desire

For human applause.

Rewind and relive and relay.

All the shit that you wanted to say.

I beckon you all to be part of making it known, your assent to the throne.”

Chaar’s moth-like wings began to nervously flutter as the fire kept growing and growing. Her powers were fire based as well, but these weren’t HER flames. They were Sunbreaker’s. And she could feel the flames beginning to singe her fingers. “L-let me go. Let me go!” Chaar yelled. But the unicorn didn’t. She just smiled. Leaning in closer. Her grip on the hand so tight it hurt the other girl’s hand.

“Human kind's got secret wants.

Our voice can take you higher.

Lose all your delusions, delusions.

Your own revolution, absolution.

Their misconstrued, myth come true.

Come on!”

The fire erupted and Chaar shrieked, closing her eyes… but at the last moment, Sunbreaker pulled the hand away, letting the dangerous fires fade to ash, with only the most minor of burns on the DG girl’s palm.

“Make 'em afraid of ya.”

Sunbreaker let the hand go and Chaar took it, backing away from the unicorn. She blew on her hand while the others just snickered and watched.

“Hey. Na-na-na-na.

Make 'em afraid of ya.

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na.

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na.

Make 'em afraid of ya.”

Sunbreaker snapped her fingers and flicked her wrist. Fire surrounded Chaar and she yelped, trying to back away, but there was nowhere to go.

“Don’t be the queen of fools!

They see what they wanna, no duh.

Say to yourself ‘no losing’.

Make 'em afraid of ya.”

Chaar lifted her hands up and formed her own fire, sending it out with a wave of her hand. It dissipated against the flames, swallowed up. Then, slowly the flames began to close in around her. She reached out a hand to touch them, only to shriek and pull back when the flames singed her finger tip.

“Ready to break their rules

Be an evil you can't help but love.

If you got the stuff to prove it.

Make 'em afraid of ya.

Ta-ta-ta-ta-da, yeah ah…”

The fires then closed in around her, making Chaar scream. Small burns formed across her frame. “K-knock it off!” That actually HURT! It was hardly a fair. Sunbreaker had been doing this for months. Chaar’d only just figured out magic was a THING! Then Sunbreaker was there again, grabbing her hand and yanking her in close, eyes only centimeters from each other. She couldn’t help it. She saw the madness in those eyes.

Chaar whimpered.

“Too far?

I'm outta my mind?

Chase the night?

Slay the light?

Feel the animal seeking a bite?

Bare my teeth cry out as I clench through the pain?

Yeah, sparkles want nothing to change.

And their players are numerous and vain.”

Chaar finally pulled her hand back, staring into the eyes of the dark general. ‘A new Chaar’. That was it, wasn’t it? The other girls were walking with rapt attention. Was she… going to be disposed of? Was that what this was? Used as an example for the other girls? No. Not possible. That wasn’t how she’d meet her end. It couldn’t be. Her powers were… real? No. They were from Obsidian. And just like how Obsidian gave them to her… they could give them to somebody else.

She was replaceable.

The smile on Sunbreaker’s face only grew as it sunk in. She walked towards Chaar, reaching out to put a hand on her shoulder. She leaned in to sing the words to her.

“So what?

Ya think you’re so tough?

Think you’ve got it rough?

The joke's on them, the skies your limit!

Disguise your ambitions.

Make the right decisions.

Defiant, on the brink, watch their numbers start to fall.”

Sunbreaker then shoved her back, sending her stumbling to the ground. She raised her right hand and a black fire formed over it, shaping itself into a sword.

“Human kind's got secret wants,

Our voice can take you higher.

Are you ready and willin'?”

“I'm willin’…” Chaar sang the words along with Sunbreaker this time. To her relief, the blade disappeared.

“So become our villain…” The rest of the DG girls echoed that last word this time.

“Their misconstrued, myth come true.

Come on! Make 'em afraid of ya!

Hey. Na-na-na-na.

Make 'em afraid of ya.

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na.

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na.

Make 'em afraid of ya!”

Sunbreaker held out her hand to Chaar and, slowly, the DG girl took it. She could do this. She wasn’t disposable. She was strong enough. She was tough enough. She could do this. She could make them afraid. Chaar gulped and was pulled to her feet before yanking her hand free. Flames formed in her palms and, this time, she sang. The music moving with her.

“Won’t be the queen of fools!

They see what they wanna, no duh.

Say to myself ‘no losing’,

Make 'em afraid of ya.

Ready to break their rules!

An evil I can't help but love

I’ve got the stuff to prove it!

I’ll make 'em afraid of me!

Yeah, yeah.”

Sunbreaker nodded, giving her a small nod. She got it. It wasn’t about power. It was about presence. Make them afraid to fight. Win the fight before it begins. It wasn’t long before the girls were leaving, once more on their way. And she was left alone. Hopefully that was enough for Eclipse and Riventon for now.

Was this her life now? Training new girls to be monsters like her? If she… stayed here? If she gave up like Double Trouble wanted her to. If she… tried to be… happy here? Could she? Alone in the room, the music started again and she wrapped her arms around herself.

“Goodbye...

To life on the cautious side...

I'll watch as it burns down...

I’ll lose my delusions (delusions)…

My own revolution (absolution)…

Her misconstrued, myth come true!

Come on! Make 'em afraid of ya!”

These girls could get it. So could she. This wasn’t about right or wrong. It was about winning. And she’d spent too long, sacrificed too much, to lose now.

“Hey, na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na!

Na-na-na-na, no!

Make them afraid of me!

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na (oh, yeah yeah)

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na!

Make them afraid of me!

Guess I'm the queen of fools!

She sees what she wants to, no duh.

Said to myself ‘no losing’,

Make her afraid of me!

Ready to break her rules!

An evil they can't help but love!

I’ve got the stuff to prove it!

Make them afraid of me!”

The song ended, finally, and she started to walk away. Picking up her mug. ‘World’s best employee’ indeed. She was Sunbreaker. She’d break the sun and anyone else who got in her way. Losing… wasn’t an option.
