[Immediately following scene 634: Mami and Sayaka Do Not Get Along]
It wasn't running away, it was a tactical retreat. Mami didn't want to waste her magic defending herself against that unhinged bluenette, and she didn't want Sayaka wasting her magic either. The girl complained so much about the limits of her soul gem, but then did such foolish things as fight Mami, and not even over a grief seed. Really, Mami was doing her a kindness by leaving.
Mami-senpai, you say you have no friends. Have you ever wondered if that was Kyubey's fault? If that's what he did with me what is stopping him from doing the same with you?
She didn't really have time to think about this question because Sayaka attacked her right after. But now that she thinks about it, Kyubey was literally trying to keep her away from Takashi just yesterday. Admittedly, Takashi's a villain, and Kyubey made some good points about him. But he was an ally, and Kyubey did imply she should not associate with him. It didn't seem too suspicious, on balance, though, because she really shouldn't associate with Takashi, but she wanted to.
Kyubey might be her best friend, but she wasn't going to let him get in the way of this. What's the point of living life, if she doesn't live it to its fullest? She'd just have to see what that little space cat did about it.
