Several weeks earlier, over the same bay:

The waves roll and crash thunderously, disturbed from underneath by hoards of chitin-shelled, clawed creatures as they make their way towards land, clamoring over jetties and docked ships.

A thunderous concussion is followed by a wave of force that knocks several dozen of the creatures flying back into the sea, the source seen to be a brown-haired girl in traditional martial arts attire, scowling as she swings into a wide kick which sends another blast outwards, throwing more of the creatures back.

Down the pier, flashes of crackling golden lightning accompany the efforts of Stellar, spinning her naginata in elaborate flourishes while light shimmers up and down its length, each time it hits one of the creatures an arcing discharge reducing it to smoking ruin.

High above on one of the massive cranes used for unloading ships two figures stand watching the battle. A girl in a dark dress with long, dark hair in twintails stands on the metal, frowning, while beside her a young man hovers in the air, wearing a long black-and-blue coat.

“There’s just too many of them,” Fuyuko says, stretching out her hand to send a spear of smoking darkness hurtling downwards, impaling a creature which falls back into the sea only to be replaced by two more nigh-instantly. “Have you figured out where they’re coming from? I don’t know how long we can keep this up.”

The boy is holding his arm up, a gauntlet clasped around his wrist flowing with lights and symbols displayed hovering over its surface as he frowns. “I’m still scanning. Charadon is picking up surges of time-space energy from under the water, but pinpointing exactly where is proving to be difficult because of all the magical interference.”

“Yeah well-” Fuyuko cuts off as she spots something down below. “Shit, Stellar is in trouble.” On the pier, the wave of creatures crawling out of the sea has intensified. The flashes of golden lightning have grown more steady and intense as well, bolts arcing down from the sky at various intervals to scatter and fry the arthropoid monsters. However its clear that the white-and-gold-clad magical girl is being overwhelmed, her strikes more desperate as the creatures crest like a wave in front of her. “I’m going to help her! Keep looking!”

With that Fuyuko, Lacuna, leaps off of the crane and dives down towards the pier, landing in a halo of darkness that slices through the creatures like blades of night. Working in tandem, she and Stellar begin to push the creatures back off of the pier into the water.

Still hovering above the crane, Kaito, the young man, watches for a moment before frowning down at the display of his Device. “It’s.. oh. Uh oh.” As the analysis finally completes, figures and a topographical map populate the holographic display in front of him.

“This.. is not going to be something we can close without a massive magical detonation.. Something capable of causing a feedback loop..” He mutters, frowning harder, his expression becoming bleak as he realizes the magnitude of the problem.

He looks down, gaze sweeping over the masses of hard-shelled creatures climbing from the sea, the martial-arts girl Chiharu throwing them back to his left, Stellar and Lacuna slicing through them en masse to his left. But still there’s more. More and more and more.

He glances down at the display again, and slowly his expression hardens. Without a word, he turns and dives down towards the sea.

Over on the pier, Fuyuko pauses in combat, turning to see Kaito plummeting down towards the water. At first she’s confused- then her expression becomes horrified as she realizes what he must be doing, even if ignorant of the details. “Kaito! No!” She screams, moments before the boy impacts the water and disappears.
