“What are we going to study today?” Hinoiri asked, so excited she was almost jumping in place. Sora said they were going to have a ‘special’ lesson today. Maybe it’d be some advanced spell, or potion, ohhhhh, or maybe even time magic!

“Kindness,” Sora said with a small, calm smile to her excited pupil.

“Kindness?” Hinoiri asked. “Like… a kindness spell?”

“No, my eager pupil,” Sora said firmly. “Kindness. What it means, why it is important. How you can show it to others. It is a cornerstone of any friendship.”

Hinoiri sighed, she could already feel annoyance rising. It looked like it was going to be a lesson just like that ‘loyalty’ one she’d been taught so long ago. Eh. Sora was an amazing teacher, surely this was important if she was teaching it.

“What is WRONG with you?” Hinoiri’s classmate yelled, her horn glowing before she flung the pot at her.

Hinoiri ducked down, narrowly avoiding getting hit by it. “I-I was just trying to help. I thought--”

“I don’t want your help!” her classmate yelled. “I didn’t ASK for your help!”

“S-Sora said that kindness is about--”

“What? Making me look like an idiot? I don’t want the help of some pony who’s half my age!”

Hinoiri stared up at the angry student. She’d… only wanted to help. Just like Sora said.

Sunbreaker lightly tossed rocks into the water. Water she’d dare not drink, especially after what La Crima had told her. Kindness. Another early lesson. One that she… never could understand.

Had she ever shown anyone kindness? Even once? Try as she might, she couldn’t remember anytime where she’d truly done something without expecting something else in return. When she had been actually kind. But she could remember plenty of times when others had shown her kindness. When they’d reached out to her, when there was nothing in it for them.

When Sailor Moon had been beaten, by her no less, yet protected her from her own allies. Buying her time to flee.

When Sayaka had saved her from that witch, rather than letting her die. Putting her life on the line for her sake.

When she’d been floundering in the water, drowning, Michiru had come to rescue her. She'd even helped teach her how to swim, without mocking her.

… When Sora had taken her in, despite those who warned her against it. When Sora had told her that she had a great destiny ahead of her, despite having no past. When Sora had given her a home, despite having no idea who she could be.

Sunbreaker picked up another rock and threw it. No. Kindness was… just something she wasn’t capable of. Maybe, in that, Sora was right. All she had was selfishness and ambition. But she would rise. And… when she achieved her destiny, she would have an eternity to learn how to be kind.
