'What the hell've you been up to these past few weeks, anyway? I was beginning to think you'd tried to go back to Etheria, or what's left of it.'
An off-hand question from Catra, probably. Just trying to understand where Adora had been after her corruption. After injuring friends. After being forced to let out anger, pain, and hurt in the worst way possible in a dark energy fueled rampage.
Nights crying alone.
Days trying to piece together her happy ending again, feeling like she has to start over from scratch.
It's a lot, even for the savior of Etheria, for the princess of power.
Going back. She'd thought of it in the past, but the fact it might even be a real option hadn't occurred to her. Her powers still worked here, so maybe... just maybe, there was a chance.
And so now she was in the abandoned district as She-Ra, holding a sword in the form of dowsing rods, trying to use it to find traces of the portal she'd come through just over a year ago.
Memories flashing past. Her introduction to the school. Her first encounter with Catra in this world.
Meeting her roommate.
Christmas with Catra. Christmas presents from new friends. A Catra plushy that still sat on her bed.
Befriending the people of this world. All of it like band-aids over a gaping wound in her heart.
Enough had covered it, for the most part, though she still hurt she'd been able to keep it together this long.
That first fight with Catra after being infected by dark energy.
Her hands around Catra's throat.
Meeting Glimmer. Learning she was with the enemy now, too. She didn't even have one of her pillars of support in this world, one of her two dearest friends who had been with her since she left the Horde.
Between those two instances, any bandaging over that hole in her heart had been torn off.
And so she continues to quietly search for that spot, that one place where she hopes that she can do something to make it all right. To get her happy ending back.
And maybe, just maybe. To go back home.
