<< "Please." >>
The desperation in that single word brought an unbidden sob from Rashmi's lips. If she were to be honest with herself -- and she tried always to be -- her primary feeling upon learning that Nicomachea had finally restored and decrypted the message from Starcrash *just* before Seriss' reveal was... fear.
She knew she wasn't going to like what she saw, and wanted to be alone to see it. Thus, she did not just wait until after lights-out; she flew down into the Gardens in the dead of night, and erected a small Barrier; just enough to shelter her, the small koi pond, and the statue of the enrobed woman that rose from the pond's center, arms folded in her sleeves. Just enough to provide a warm, golden light into this little bubble of empty world.
She thought she was ready. But nobody can truly be ready for a sense-recording of their best friend's putative final moments. Nicomachea did his best to filter out the pain... but knowing the pain existed, and knowing it was being filtered, was enough for her imagination to fill in the gap of agony between simulated and real. Rashmi has not, in the past two years, been a stranger to pain.
She studied Viluy's face, saw the absolute lack of emotion as the Witch stared down upon the dying body of a girl who had only ever wanted to help people. Who had never believed herself equal to the task she'd handed herself, but squared her shoulders and took it up anyway. Someone who didn't deserve to die cold and alone in a hostile alien world. Someone who, she knew, waited until *after* hope and life had faded nearly to nothing, to begin her grim work, and twist the body of a beloved friend, into a cruel mockery of herself.
'Unfit.'
'Unworthy.'
Cold fury lashed through Rashmi's spine, as << Message Ends >> blinked in golden text at the upper corner of her vision. Viluy was responsible. She knew -- intellectually -- but now she had recorded evidence that Viluy, that utterly heartless woman, had profited off of the tragedy that would not have happened but for her.
In that moment, Rashmi knew, she would never lose sleep if Viluy was gone from this world.
And if the opportunity came... she knew a lot of people who would probably agree with her.
