"Luna..."

It was late in the night, far past the time Usagi would usually be curled up in her bed and snoozing the night away, but she wasn't sleeping. She wasn't even in her bed, but instead sitting on the edge of the bathtub, feet buried in fluffy bunny slippers, body clad in loose pajamas to keep away the summer heat. Her voice was low and soft, to better avoid waking Naru, safely sleeping in her own bunk.

The bathroom door was closed. The lighting was dull - Radiant Heart Academy spared no expenses for their students, and that included a dimmer setting on the lights. There was no one to hear their conversation.

Luna lay in Usagi's lap, her legs tucked under her in a classic cat loaf. Her ears were slightly pricked with curiosity. Her tail swayed. She was relaxed in spite of herself, indulging Usagi's need to touch something, to be touched, and grounded.

"Luna," Usagi started again, watching without seeing as her hand stroked from the top of Luna's head to the the base of her spine, again, and again. "Why did you choose me?"

"I didn't," Luna answered, and her voice was gentle for once. Maybe she feared Usagi would take the words as a blow, that they would damage her confidence. She purred, a soothing, rumbling, and butted her head up against Usagi's hand. There was no sign of her usual scolding in her tone. "The broach is yours, Usagi. It's always been yours. It was only ever going to be yours. You're the one. You're Sailor Moon."

But the explanation was what Usagi had feared. It wasn't that she wanted to have been chosen. It was that she had hoped, against hope, that it was an accident. That this had happened to her because of bad luck. But now she knew that wasn't the case, that that was never to be. There went her idle thoughts, her wistful dreams - there went the possibility that in another world, another life, Usagi Tsukino was not a magical girl, was not Sailor Moon.

She said nothing, after that.

What was the point in saying more? Any answers she wanted would have to wait. There was no point in trying to get them without Rei-chan, not when she'd end up having to repeat it all to her - and to Wako-chan, and Amy-chan, and if she could find her, Yellow Pearl Voice-chan too, because this involved all of them. That man may have been after her, but he'd tried to kill them all. A real person. Not a monster, but - a person. A man. Who'd wanted to kill them all. Who'd hated her enough for the air to shake with it.

Any answers she might get out of Luna were ones they all deserved to hear. They couldn't belong to this silent night, this lonely bathroom.

They sat together, girl and cat, Luna's soft purr a quiet rumble, not enough to scare off the nightmares sure to come.
