Penguin Park may be situated around the titular playground, but it also features an large pond. Those standing on the shore can cross an old but well-maintained bridge to explore a small island and pay their respects at the equally small island.
The first thing one encounters when crossing the bridge is the tall torii gate, crafted from traditional wood, left unpainted save for the black upper lintel. Once one passes under the torii, they are given to cleanse themself at the large water filled stone basin, equipped with a water ladle for just this purpose. Once cleansed, visitors may give offers at the awaiting offering box, the wooden slats and golden characters carefully tended. The island shrine is simple, with no regularly stationed kannushi tending it. Twice a month, kannushi from neighboring shrines come to tend to the shrine, ensuring it is well-mantained. Around the shrine are plenty of worn-but-lovingly tended statues. In the pond are many lily pads and on the island itself are several cherry blossom trees, with still more on the other end of the bridge. In the spring, the island shrine is popular with locals and tourists due to the scenic location. |
