Hinoiri stood on top of the academy, staring out at the horizon. Watching the setting sun. She felt the music once more, boiling up inside her. But she didn’t fight it. Not again. “Goodbye… Sora.” She’d spent so long chasing the sun. Now it was time to let it go.
“Your care… was all I desired.”
Hinoiri turned her back to the sun while it sunk behind the horizon, casting her into the shadows.
“But all that grew inside of me was the doubts that I acquired…”
Hinoiri stared at her reflection in one of the roof’s windows. Seeing herself, standing before Sora once more. Banished. Dismissed. Tossed aside.
“When I refused to fall and I saw my path ahead.
That’s when you said you’d help but you banished me instead!”
Hinoiri waved her hand, banishing those images from her mind. They didn’t matter anymore. Never again. Sora… Sora had turned her back on her. For the last time.
“Like a phoenix burning bright in the sky
I’ll show there’s another side to me, you can’t deny!”
Hinoiri lifted her hand to the sky, as if she could pluck the stars from the sky. One day… one day she would. She would break the sun. The stars. All of it.
“I may not know what the future holds, but hear me when I say!
That my past does not define me ‘cause my past is not today!”
Hinoiri walked to the edge of the roof, stepping on the edge of holding her arms out. Letting the wind blow through her mane. Err, hair.
“Devotion… is what I believed…
Would be the only way to set me free.
But when you disappeared and I found myself alone…
That’s when they offered their hands to me and now it feels like I am home!”
That was it. This world… was a home. It was somewhere she belonged. Somewhere she was wanted. Cared for. Even loved. She had friends here. People… who liked her. Adrien. Naru. Usagi. Swiftwind.
But people who liked her for her. Who she truly was. Powerful. Ambitious. Brilliant. Selfish. Greedy. Arrogant. Even if she didn’t deserve it. Double Trouble. Sayaka. Riventon. She had people who saw her and thought she was brilliant. Who wanted to be around her. Who helped her. Who didn’t turn their back on her. She turned and ran across the roof, making the air blow through her hair.
“Like a phoenix burning bright in the sky
I’ll show there’s another side to me, you can’t deny!”
Hinoiri tossed her jacket into the air, letting the dark energy flow along her in wisps before she leaped up and then skidded along the ground. Gazing out over the rising moon. Fitting, in a way.
“I may not know what the future holds, but hear me when I say!
That my past does not define me ‘cause my past is not today!”
Hinoiri rose up, the dark energy flowing along her, forming the horn on her forehead.
Goodbye, Sora. No longer would she walk in that alicorn’s shadow. The sun would be broken and she would be free. Because she no longer needed her mentor. She had Obsidian and Double Trouble.
