On Probation or Emi Is Such a Rebel
Date of Scene: 07 November 2024
Location: Dorms #3
Synopsis: After being caught skipping class, Emi receives a dressing down from her probation volunteer, Mister Sato. Hinoiri overhears, discovering just what a delinquent her neighbor is.
Cast of Characters: Emi Hoshino, Hinoiri Kirara

Emi Hoshino has posed:
Commotion in front of the dorm room besides her's. School hasn't been out long, perhaps a couple hours, and Hinoiri from her own dorm catches bits and pieces of it. Japan's culture of shaming on display, it seems.

"... do with you. You know the rules. You agreed to them. That's why you're here and not there, Emi."

"Mister Sato, I --"

"Do not. Just do not. This is the third time you have been caught skipping. Do you know how embarassing that is to me? I have agreed to volunteer for you, I have vouched for you, and is this how you repay those who look out for you?"

"Mister Sato, I --"

"I just said do not, Ms. Hoshino. You need to have more respect for this institution. This is not a game. You will not remain here if you can not respect it. I don't need to remind you what happens then."

There's an indignant, frustrated sound from Emi that she's not being allowed to talk. That is the sound of someone fuming, someone biting their tongue, and just enduring the withering dressing down they're getting. It continues for a few more moments, him making her dirty laundry all more obvious.

"I'm going to give you another chance -- but I will be back. And soon. And we will have a longer discussion about what it means to be respectful of my time and commitment to your rehabilitation."

"I don't NEED to be --"

"I said be *quiet*. It's my turn to talk and you need to listen for just *once*."

Probation volunteers can apparently be very serious, especially when they're mad. And Mister Sato is clearly *very* angry with her.

Hinoiri Kirara has posed:
Hinoiri Kirara blinked a few times when she heard... that. All of *that*. She made her way to the door and popped it open, peering out. "Everything okay out here?" she asked.

It likely didn't help matters that she was dressed like exactly the kind of trouble maker Emi claimed to be. Leather jacket with spikes, black and red boots that went up to her thighs with a flame motif on them. The red top under the jacket and the orange skirt with a rainbow streak down the side at least didn't look very delinquenty. The orange and red stripes for her hair, though? That likely did not help.

"So, I get that you're doing something very important... probably. But you're kind of yelling and *some* of us are studying right now, so if you could keep it down and act less like her jilted ex throwing a tantrum over her new crush? That'd be great."

Emi Hoshino has posed:
"Ms. Kirara. I had hoped that you would serve as an example to Ms. Hoshino --"

Emi's eyes bulge.

"... but she doesn't seem capable of listening to anyone. Pease, though, remember to set an example for your fellow students when they need one, as she so clearly does." On paper, Hinoiri surely looks like an example to model.

On paper.

Emi is *fuming* but is quickly coming to rely on that most Japanese of answers to her problems: good old emotional repression.

Her expression smooths out and she puts her hands on her hips and bows to Mister Sato.

"I'll do better, Mister Sato," she tells him, cooly.

"You had best," he tells her. "Look to your fellow students for guidance. Remember and respect what has been given to you. I am very disappointed in you," he adds, going in for the kill. And then he turns to go.

Hinoiri Kirara has posed:
Hinoiri Kirara blinked a few times, before glancing between the pair of them. "Please, if someone is looking to me as an example of what to do, it really just depends on what day of the week on if that's a good idea or not..." she muttered. She crossed her arms, cocked an eye, before glancing back to Emi.

Once the guy was gone, she let out a low whistle. "So... is that like... your uncle or something? Cause gonna level with you, kiiiiind of a jerk. My condolences if that's your dad."

Not that she'd know what one was like, but well... the 'disappointed in you' definitely sounded like something a parent might say, maybe. If she'd had one.

"Hinoiri-Kirara, not sure we've really met? You okay?"

Emi Hoshino has posed:
"... no one. He's no one at all," mutters Emi under her breath. She adjusts her school uniform, having not had the opoortunity to get out of it, and takes off her jacket before slouching nonchalantly with it draped across one shoulder.

"Just my probation volunteer." No point in making a fuss of it. People a little more experienced with these things who overheard would have no doubt understood already. She holds her thumb and forefinger apart just a scant distance to indicate 'just a little bit' at him being a jerk. She's taking the moment. She needs one. Deep, calming breaths. Being yelled at is always an experience, no matter how cool you might think you are, or pretend to be in any event.

"...Emi," she answers, finally, glancing at her. "Emi Hoshino."

Hinoiri Kirara has posed:
Hinoiri Kirara gave a small nod, crossing her arms. "Huh. Probation... volunteer? That like a probation officer? Didn't know this school even had those."

"... Are you okay? Like... if you need some help, there's a lot of people here who'd likely offer. And... frankly... if he's a volunteer, he should probably stop volunteering, the job is obviously getting to him."

She made a mental note that apparently her new room is next to the trouble maker. Eh, oh well. The girl was obviously a mundane, so it wasn't like she was a threat.

Emi Hoshino has posed:
Obviously.

Emi closes her mismatched eyes a moment and then lets out a breath, mind drifting for a moment. All the yelling was worth it, so far as she's concerned, and now that Sato's gone, she's picked up something of a serene, almost sleepy mien, dismissive and detatched.

"Mmmn. I was told he has a very high rate of successful rehabilitation and what not, but what can I say? I'm a terrible disappointment."

Hinoiri Kirara has posed:
Hinoiri Kirara gave a small shrug. "Really? If that's the kind of way he talks to people, I'm surprised he's had so much success. So, what about you is so 'disappointing'? Why'd you skip class?" Hinoiri asked.

"... Curious, did he even ask why you skipped class? Cause I'll be honest, I've seen a lot of people here skip the odd class, not get in any trouble. Yet this guy is throwing up a stink like you just tried to light the school on fire when you did it."

Pause.

"... You didn't, did you?"

Emi Hoshino has posed:
"It doesn't matter. I skipped. And I skipped because I felt like it."

Which is true. It's not like she can talk about what she was actually doing, anyway.

"Those people are not on probation," she remarks of those who've skipped class otherwise. "He's only mad because he did a surprise visit and had to wait outside the class for me not to turn up. Not a fun time for him, I'm sure. Very disappointing." A pause.

"...so what if I did?" she asks, suddenly giving her an wide-eyed look of faux-innocence.

Hinoiri Kirara has posed:
Hinoiri Kirara gave a light snort. "Uh huh. Fair enough. Never been on probation, so..." Then paused. "Though, I guess some of this might count... hm. I'll need to ask Usagi about that later. Eh. Probably not the same thing."

"If you're going to try lighting the school on fire, just be careful. That dorm room that exploded a few months back? That was mine and I'm really not in the mood to have to move all my stuff *again*. It'll be harder to replace this time, too." Now that she wasn't being bank rolled by Obsidian.

"But... yeah. If you're fine, I guess I'll let you get back to your... well. Whatever it is you were planning before all the yelling."

Emi Hoshino has posed:
"Ah, no. I wouldn't want to get into the same trouble *twice*. That's not a good look. If you're gonna break the rules, you gotta break them in novel ways. That's the key, you know? Keep them on edge and anticipating."

She rolls her eyes at her own words, not even beginning to mean them seriously.

She turns her eyes back towards Hinoiri after looking at the ceiling a moment.

"Ehhh. I dunno," she answers, "I don't have any plans tonight." There's a wince as she rubs the back of her neck. Sore.

Hinoiri Kirara has posed:
Hinoiri Kirara gave a light chuckle, shaking her head. "Really? And here I thought causing trouble was its own reward. But an over acheiver, I can appreciate that. Maybe you could steal someone's scooter next."

"... So, is that your way of asking if I'd like to hang? Awwww, are you shy?" Hinoiri asked in a teasing tone. "You don't need to be scared, I hear I'm actually quite pleasant to be around, once you get to know me. Assuming you don't try to like... cut my hair with scissors or light me on fire or something. That and my roommate won't be back for a while yet, she's..." She paused, glanced at her watch. "Rehearsing about now, actually."

Emi Hoshino has posed:
"You?" queries Emi, as if surprised at the idea that she might be pleasent.

"Well, I wasn't asking -- but if you did want to, there's a rare double feature up at the Roppongi Hills cinema where they play some old foreign scary movies and stuff, so if you wanna come along for that, that's fine. Besides, it takes me a long while to get ready to go out." She gestures at herself. Hinoiri has, after all, seen her in her street clothes and makeup. She's so goth, she probably thinks the Sisters of Mercy sing about her.

"Don't think I'll set you on fire *this* time," she adds, taking a moment to stretch more fully. Even aside from the dangers of the Dreamscape, sleeping on a bench is *not* comfortable.

Hinoiri Kirara has posed:
Hinoiri Kirara blinked a few times and the smile fell off her lips. "Yes, me. I'm not sure exactly what rumors you've been hearing but I'm a bucking delight." That was debatable. Either way, though, she sighed and shook her head.

"But, yeah. Why not? Sounds like fun." She pulled out her phone and then flicked through it, bringing her number up. "Here. Send me a text. Then--" She paused. "Oh, right. There's... a whole thing with the people here. Just so you know, I already have a girlfriend, so if this is flirting, not going to work. But hanging out at the movies? That I can do. It..."

She then frowned, watching the girl move. "Are you okay? Maybe you should go visit the school nurse. If you hurt yourself, you should deal with it sooner rather than later."

Emi Hoshino has posed:
Blink. Blink.

"...n-no?" she stammers, caught over the question as to whether or not she' flirting and talk of girlfriends. "No. It's not flirting," she says more steadily after her initial confusion passes.

"Naw. I just took a nap in the wrong spot is all. Turns out that sleeping in bad positions doesn't just hurt when you pass thirty."

She clicks her tongue against the roof of her mouth in disappointment.

Hinoiri Kirara has posed:
Hinoiri Kirara gave a light chuckle, shaking her head. "Sure. Send me a text when you're good, I'll come out. I don't really have any major plans for tonight, anyway," she said, before turning to head towards her dorm room.

See? Socializing wasn't so hard. And look, she'd even kind of made a normie friend out of it. Someone who wasn't magic for once. It might do her some good, maybe even take her for a ride on the motorcycle. Girl seemed pretty tense, might do her some good to have some fun. Especially after dealing with that windbag...
