Makoto Kino is a girl who has had to grow up quick. She had a happy and healthy life with a family that loved her...right up until the point when her family was killed in a plane crash. She was raised by some of her more distant relatives, but they were busy workers, with little time to raise a young girl. Mako compensated by being as much of a homemaker as she could be, learning to tend house, to cook, to bake, to arrange flowers, to try and create more of a loving environment. She also got good at defending herself, as there were more than a few kids who can be cruel to someone growing up without a traditional family structure. Still, it formed an emotional distance, and she wasn't exactly sad when she was finally able to go off to junior high on her own.

Her first attempt at junior high...didn't go well. Makoto is a tall, imposing girl, and her background meant she tended to come off as unapproachable. The combination led to people accusing her of being a delinquent, and after a fight started at school, Makoto got blamed, with the need to head off to another school, only months into her first year.

Enter Radiant Heart Academy. Makoto got an invitation from them timed almost exactly with getting tossed out of her prior school, as if they knew she needed it. She went there and was quite surprised to find such a large and impressive school wanted her, with her reputation. She's just now getting to the school, and has only been there a week, nervous about being the "new girl" on top of all of her other issues. Still, it's at least seemed that while she still intimidates some people, the students here are...more open? Maybe it's all the exchange students. Still, she's managed to sign up for a couple of school clubs, and starting to feel like she belongs here. The fact that they have more Western students even means they've promised she'll have a proper school uniform soon. She's made some "school social" connections, through her clubs, but she hasn't yet met anyone she'd call a true friend. Still, she's hopeful, for the first time in a long time. This place feels like it's full of potential, and she can't wait to see what it'll bring.
